Empathy: Generic rebel officer vest variant

Post by tenebris » Wed Mar 21, 2018 12:46 pm

So I've decided to do a generic officer for TFA. There are 3 variants, I'm doing the yellowy/gold/tan......impossible to get right colour vest variant. There seem to be slight differences in fit with the vest neck line, fit under the arms and the front person to person.

These are the standards we've been working on, so I'm working from them

1. Jacket or Vest

Option 3:
-Gold to golden brown wrap front vest. Fabric with a fulled/brushed texture and no visible weave (similar to melton wool) is preferred.
-Wrap front closing left over right with no visible closures.
-Vest has a center back seam.
-Vest back is fitted to the waist through the side seams.
-Vest features shoulder seams on both sides.
-There are two rectangular patch pockets sized approximately 5" x 7" that are placed on either side. They sit approximately at the hip.

2. Shirt
-A cream/light tan to dark beige, long sleeved shirt of lightweight woven fabric, such as cotton.
-Sleeves are gathered into a wide cuff ending at the wrist. Cuff fasteners should be hidden.
-The shirt collar stands up approximately 1 inch and opens at the left shoulder, secured with non-visible fasteners.
-The shirt may optionally close down the left side of the front, but the fasteners should not be visible.

Note: these are consistent with the existing Jr. Controller Standard, and they wear the same shirt.

3. Trousers
-Dark olive to chocolate brown in a bottom-weight twill or similar fabric or a pant weight gaberdine. No denim.
-Pants should have a high waist and fly front.
-Worn with the pant leg tucked into boots. Pant legs should be fitted enough to tuck without excessive blousing.

Optional: Patch front pockets that extend upward to form the belt loops.

Optional for Pants worn with Option 3 (Gold Vest): Combat stitching around the knee.

4. Belt
-Golden brown to dark brown leather belt, 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 7 cm) wide.
-Weathered, silver toned, solid rectangular buckle with rounded corners. Buckle should be the same width as the belt.
-No visible rivets.

5. Boots

Option 1:
- Calf high black or brown boot, featuring a Velcro strap at the top and a vertical zipper on the inside. Boots have a flat sole. (Similar to the PoZu Well 2 Boot.)

Optional Items:
1. Screen accurate Resistance rank badge, any branch any rank.

2. Teal fabric Resistance medical services arm band worn on left shoulder. 4″ wide, with 2″ high Aurebesh lettering in white on band that translates to MEDIC.

Shirt

Is done as that's the same as the controller.
I made it from very lightweight calico.

If you need a pattern ref: Simplicity 7497 is very nice, but its a vintage one.

Dye recipe: For 350 grams fabric. x2 packets sunflower yellow dylon hand dye in 12litres of water for 4 mins. Then x1 packet of dylon dark brown hand dye (the old one with the fir cone on the front) in 8litres of water for 1 min, then I hot washed it back slightly.

If I re- make one at any point I might use woodland brown for a watered down bath.

Belt

Tandy smaller size belt blank (I think its the one for 1 3/4 sizes belts). weathered with acrylic and stuff I had lying about.
The belt has to fit flush to the buckle so i cut away some groves so it fits, the belt is 2 inches, I got it from grants leathers on ebay, I think I'm going to swap it out for dark brown though.

Boots

Boots are Oxygen volga, stripped everything off, dyed with dark brown ecoflo waterstain. nappa toes and vecro straps are also dyed and stitched on with a leather needle, glued with ecoflo leather craft glue.

Trousers
I've been working on a new high waist semi fitted trouser block so I think I'm going to use that with brown gaberdine. Brown trousers would also be fine, with no decoration or pockets.

Vest

So I'm not sure the vest should actually have side seams, some pics I think I can see them, others not so much. my forward curving shoulder and the amount I need in the upper back is not liking the fit with no bust darts or side seams, so I shall just do my best. I'm not loosing sleep over it as some of the generics seem to be less fitted through the underarms. You can def see the shaping seams in the back, so I'm putting those in.

The colour....makes me want to cry in a corner. It changes with the lighting from quite yellowy to quite browny.
This fabric has been really, really hard to source. It needs to be a melton/coating or jacketing.....NOT craft felt.

In the end I brought 1.3 meters of saffron cashmere from Fabric godmother......prayed a lot and dyed it, multiple times.

You can also get:

USA: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0372713/the- ... tique-gold

UK: https://www.activefabrics.co.uk/gaby-wool-fabric.html

Dye recipe: 1 mter 30cm fabric. x1 dylon hand dye in dark brown 10ltes water 25 mins, then the same ratio again for 35 mins. It also had a quick dip in tea stain. I'm using the reverse of the fabric too, as its tighter.

Thanks for all the dying information - it really helps to know the timings! The boots and belt look great. So many clever leatherworkers in this Base! You're off to a strong start ... looking forward to seeing this build develop.

I'm getting there. I made it as a 4 panel with a small dart in the side as i was struggling to fit it, I did try to do it without.....but with the extra amount i need to move it was just not going to work........just need to pop the lining in and sew on the pockets.

thank you, as usual I'm resisting the urge to remake it. I think i only like garments at version 2 or 3.

If anyone needs a pattern ref for this I literally just came across a vintage butterick pattern, number 3974. It has the front bust darts in but you would need to add the back shaping.

Also fabric. To make the front facing and cut the back on the straight you would need more fabric than 1.3 depending on your size. I always have to cut the back on the bias if I'm not putting pleats or gussets in due to needing loads of fabric in the upper back due to severe hypermobility. .

Thanks Mark.

So I decided to add the medic armband......Crl says it needs to spell out MEDIC in aurebesh, but looking at the pics it only says MED? So will check this with someone.

Looks, as you say, like med to me. As opposed to MED though.

I don't think it matters, I'm not sure Aurebesh has capitals and lowercase?

The typeface itself will mirror horizontally to make uppercase from lower. I read that's Sith like so I swapped all my helmet lettering to lowercase. How much of an impact that is, I don't know but I went with all lower just in case.

I tried to read up on it, as I was interested..........But its all too confusing, Old Aurebesh, New Aurebesh, pre 97??? I gather the stuff in the new films is new Aurebesh? At one point the caps were just larger versions or the lowercase was just smaller. I'm just going to copy it from the ref.

So the dimensions given on the CRL are approximate, I originally used them and it came out too tall, So I tried again.

Fabric is Kona in spruce, blue dye bath, then tea dyed to weather. Printed with a new fabric paint..... called Rico, which actually i prefer to the Dylon one. With a stencil and sponge.
