Scarif Marine WIP

Post by MunshkinFC » Thu Sep 09, 2021 3:03 pm

After years (since 1977) of lurking in the shadows, some of which I was actually quite young, I have finally decided to construct a costume.

Although I would probably have opted for another outfit at another time I've picked a Scarif Marine due to the production of Andor.

So repeated watching of R1 from 1hr 30mins has ensued (actually watched it completely but pay closer attention from about then).

Currently have the following (pics to follow if being 24hr carer to 3 autistic kids and a wheelchair bound wife allows):

Coyote BDU pants.
Black leather gaiters (used Swiss army)
Black Chelsea style work boots.
Olive Green PLCE belt
(Plus print files for helmet blast shield and A300 sniper blaster)
Sten bandolier.

Found a lightweight Gorka 3 top (well full suit but the pants will be retasked). Still to purchase.

A friend claims to have a helmet I can have, but I may purchase another.

What pouches do people favour?
On the belt is it commonplace to remove the buckles and reattach on the reverse?

Is it obvious I'm actually trying to sound like I know what I'm doing?

More used to making stuff up as I go along and creating a narrative afterwards. That and doing crossover costumes for comic cons.

Welcome to the beach.

Firstly, always be aware of the published standard for a costume you're making. The R1 Beach Boys can be found here:

https://rebellegion.com/rebel-marine-scarif/

You'd also be advised to have a slow amble through the exhaustive standards review discussions. Worth being aware of any discussion around the costume in progress. You can find it here (separate account to these forums is needed):

http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/ ... p?t=115664

Going by what you have said so far, we would expect you to be OK with:

Trousers
Gaiters (there is discussion about these being phased out but they are still on the standard)
Boots
Roll pin PLCE Belt (inside out, so the loops on the belt show)

If we look at the current standard
Variation B

Russian Gorka top type III (button down) or IV (pullover) of olive-green fabric with brown reinforcement panels.

-AND-

U.S. Medium Olive Drab Nylon Grenade Vest, dyed black with yellow detail on the two grenade pouches on the upper right shoulder. The grenade pocket tabs, grenade pocket edge tape, and the vest’s edge tape are painted brown.

-OR-

Sten Machine Carbine Magazine sash-style bandolier.
a Gorka 3 is requested to be paired with a Sten bandolier, not a Sterling one. The Sten one having more pockets. However, there is a reference image of Mefran showing a Gorka under a Sterling bandolier which is accepted in the standards revision threads. The gorka may require a visible comm badge as it's not hidden under something and visible buttons hiding from view.

The helmet requirements:

Variation B
M1-style helmet with tan cloth helmet cover, and green or dark grey replica outer ring. Cloth helmet cover should have ribbed strip on the top that does not extend past the replica outer ring. Screen accurate logo may be placed on front left of replica outer ring. Rubber band circling outer ring, flashlight, and pill box may be present but are optional.
So an M1 style pot will need the outer shield and ribbed cloth cover. There are some small added detail pieces to add to the shield and straps but these aren't too hard to source.

Common pouches used are French 3 grenade pouches, 58 pattern kidney or water bottle pouches and Greek Thompson magazine pouches.

That should give you some food for thought to begin with.

I have already created a stencil for the screen accurate helmet logo (it aren't red nor bird shaped).

The Sten bandolier I have seems to be right.

I think I have the print file for a comm badge. Where would it be positioned? Is it in a stitched pocket as per the flak vests/Cassian Andor vest?

Possibly the only problem I can currently predict is the cloth helmet cover as my sewing skills are somewhat non existent.

I assume weathering of the costume is expected.

The yellow logo is optional anyway but as long as it looks like the references in the 10 o'clock position, it should be ok.

The comm badge goes on the left chest, in a pocket with a few lines of stitching. This Mefran pic shows it pretty well

The cloth cover can be found for sale in a few places on the web, or just the pattern which isn't too hard a sew for an alterations place or seamstress. You can also use a vietnam style cloth cover as a template and sew a quilted panel on top.

Weathering helps greatly with the appearance but it's not mandated. Do it a bit at a time so it's not overdone as you can't easily roll it back.

BDU trousers are currently OK, but these will likely be replaced by a cargo style trouser in the future. Better to be aware of such possible changes.
