Sandstorm Leia WIP

Post by BlueRey » Wed May 01, 2019 2:26 pm

So on a whim just before Celebration I agreed to take another Leia’s Huttslayer set off her hands (got a great deal for it!). It’s not a costume I ever considered tackling for various reasons, but I’ve always fancied a vibro axe and this outfit is a great excuse to get one!

I’ve always loved a good cloak and so I’m going to tackle the deleted scene Sandstorm variant, which is slightly more practical and kid-friendly and would be the only way I’d be really comfortable doing the Huttslayer look at a con (or basically anywhere other than my living room!).

I have the requisite bun donuts, pins and braided extensions from my Ceremonial Leia. The bikini set is in reasonably good nick - I need to trim the boots and add the boot covers, reinforce the bra top and replace the leather lacing, but otherwise it looks pretty good and since it’s going to be mostly covered up anyway, I am most worried about the cloak and goggles! It doesn’t have the chain links on the collar but since the collar is optional anyway with this variant, I won’t worry about that for now.

I will post some reference images below. This is the base fabric I am pondering for the cloak. It’s proved nearly impossible to find anything that remotely resembles the colour, texture and weave, and after lots and LOTS of browsing I discovered this:

Image

What does everyone think on first look? I’ve ordered a swatch as it’s hard to tell the thickness on screen. I quite like the colour, and it has that ribbed effect, although the texture isn’t quite the same.

For the head wrapping I was considering a waffle cotton of some kind, it has that soft, bulky feel and the texture looks similar. A beige with a tea bath seems like it could be a pretty good match.

Hi Bekky,

Hope you enjoyed Celebration. Pleased you are tackling this one. It's always nice when you get a good deal. Thank you for adding ref photos to compare with your fabric. I like what you have found and think that the colour looks good, and the pattern isn't far off either. The wrap that her and Lando wear are supposed to look like things that could b taken off of the Skiff, so I think that ethnic blankets may be your source of inspiration here. They are very much natural woven fabrics, or give the appearance of.

Looking at the reference in the 'Star Wars Costumes - The Original Trilogy' book, there appear to be almost three fabric components to it. The striped, the twill beige plain and the tighter striped one (main). You would sewing these together to achieve your final wrap. So things like ethnic and military blankets will be your way to go. When you get you sample in, could you post it here please? Would love to see it. You're right about the weight and thickness to these, and think that that will seal the deal if it's right. They do look like a heavy wool weight to them.

Hope that is of help. Will keep a look out for you for any potential fabrics.

Also, the goggles are 'off-the-shelf protective goggles adorned with greeblies by Pete Ronzani's plastics department.' They look almost military goggles to me. Hope that is of some use.

I think the 'hood fabric is very close to the Jawa and boush's cloak......I know clothears have just done a run of fabric that is very close. It might be worth seeing, if they have any extra bits you could buy? Or monks cloth.

This is pricy........but I thought i'd throw it up.

Otherwise, looking on the main boards at what fabric people have found for Jawa and boush? Yoga Blankets seem to have that hand woven almost 'rag, rug' weave to them.......I had a blanket almost the exact same fabric as the main, but i just can't remember where is was from, we use to travel alot, so could be anywhere.

As I said to Kat, I think the 'crossiant' wool is pretty good......be good to see the sample. Really excited about this one :)...like Kat I'll keep an eye out for you.

Have you thought about the patterning? I don't think its just a blanket wrapped, it looks more like a an asymmetrical hooded poncho, with a longer attached panel at the front which tapers and wraps round.

Thanks so much both!! This is really helpful.

I love the look of the yoga blankets, only problem is the size - the cloak is so big, I’d need several of them to get the same amount of fabric and then you have the seam issue. I’ll do some more research while I wait for my samples!

And thanks for the tip about the Jawa cloaks - I’ll definitely email clothears to see what they still have in stock!

I’m just waiting to hear back from Clothears - unfortunately their run of Tusken/Jawa fabric is over, but I’m hoping they have some left as I think it looks spot on for the hood.

I received my fabric samples, first from Mood. The “croissant” wool twill at the bottom of this picture is not bad at all although the ridged effect isn’t as big and visible as I’d ideally like. Above it is a sample I ordered in case it would work for the hood - unfortunately I think the pattern is too obvious?

Image

A close up in better light. It’s not perfect but I think the colour is pretty good!

Image

And next are some fabric samples I ordered on a whim from a curtain store! I like the weight, texture and pattern a lot although unfortunately they all have a VERY noticeable sheen in person...

I actually think the croissant for the hood and the other one could work for the main fabric with a bit of tea dying? It has the right quality's even if it not exact. What do you think Kat?

Image

I think the curtain/upholstery fabric might be a bit heavy and you dont want sheen, it needs to look more earthy I think?

See this is why I need these WIP threads, I never would have considered them the other way around! A tea bath will probably work well, it’s a wool/linen blend, although I’m worried about the sheer volume of it and getting it even - the cloak appears to look the same inside and out so I assume I’ll need to self-line it, which leaves a LOT of fabric to dye!

I’m going to message cloth house just to check if they have anything in stock that’s similar to the cloak (asking them was a clothears recommendation). On the hood, their Jawa/Tusken fabric is arriving in a few weeks and they suggested I message back then and they’ll see if they have a leftover cut big enough for me - if not, I may take your suggestion of the mood fabric!

The feel and weight of the curtain fabric was actually really lovely, it’s just wayyyy too soft and shiny looking. Such a shame!

Sounds like a plan. If that's cloth house in Soho, they do some really lovely organic fabrics....I've been eyeing their Japanese cottons for a quilt, they have some stuff like the live action belle...its just soooo pretty.

Baby step updates!

On Kat and Empathy’s suggestion I bought a cotton dust sheet for version 1 of the hood. When doubled up it has a really nice thickness and has a visible woven texture, so I’m going to use it to figure out the pattern - it probably won’t be the “forever hood” as the texture is quite coarse, but while I wait for clothears to come back to me on how much Tusken fabric they have left, it’ll do very nicely! It’s also HUGE so I can use it to figure out the cloak pattern too Image

Image

Secondly, I realised I had a “d’oh” moment - the sample I showed you of the mood fabric was the side WITHOUT the ribbed pattern Image I haven’t had much luck in finding a fabric I’m happy with otherwise, so I went ahead and ordered it. If it’s not clearable I’ll count it as v1 - but as I’m keen to wear this at SDCC, I wanted to have something decent in hand sooner rather than later!

Currently I’m draping and pinning to figure out the shape of the main long part of the cloak. From what I can see, as shown in this reference picture, the long part with the stripes is a separate piece to the one that is used as a hood here and draped around at the arms in front? It looks like a shorter but much wider layer that is sewn to the main cloak, and doesn’t have the stripes:

Image

Image

Also at the front there you can see that the hood seems to be a long triangle at the front, to which the main cloak is stitched. So I’ve pinned my fabric in this shape. I’ve also pinned in some gathering at the top back so it looks nice and full - this will be hidden at the top by the second layer.

Image

Image

I’m going in pretty much blind to this due to the lack of reference images, so any feedback is so useful!!

Also, here is the base huttslayer kit and the goggles I bought to modify. It’s in pretty good shape - I’m planning to cut and sew the boots together this afternoon.

Sorry It's taken me a while, as per my PM, I've been away.

Looking for more refs I found this on the RL forum, I'm sure you've seen it....But patterning wise, this is how I would go, I'm not sure it's pleated in. In the small pic from behind it looks quite flat pulled round her. I'm going to keep looking and could do with copies of the pics in that thread as can't enlarge them.

Now you've got the lined fabric and we can see it draped, that looks like a good find you've found.

With the patterning, it's Housti to be a lot a fabric, wrapped and draped. Looking at the refs, I would suspect that there are any pleats in there.

Make yourself a toile. Old bedsheets from charity shops are great as they give a decent yardage. Work from the hood first, get that right then layer on top. At the moment, the swathe of fabric is making it difficult to determine a pattern.

Thanks both!! I’m part way through making a toile - so far it’s in four parts, the main striped section which is sewn to the triangular piece in the hood fabric, two long thinner parts sewn to the side at the top which are then draped and looped around the arms, and one extra back piece on top of the main striped piece which covers where the thin draped parts are attached.

Good news is that Clothears has enough leftover from their run of Tusken fabric that I’ll be able to use it for my hood! It will arrive on Monday.

And by way of an update - the boots! They look a little darker in this picture than real life:

One more update - I received the cotton I’ll be using for the lower striped part of the cloak. They’re different colour variations of the same fabric so have a nice natural texture and match pretty well to my eye. I went for a soft medium brown, pale yellow and a natural cream cotton (it looks white in this picture due to my office lighting, will try to get a better image when I’m home!)
